 Colour Therapy

Our surroundings can have a significant impact on how we feel, particularly the colours we use inside our homes, evoking feelings of calm, excitement and happiness if applied thoughtfully. While everyone experiences colour differently, understanding how certain hues affect our overall mood can be helpful when designing a bedscape that inspires relaxation.

Flocca Linen Sheets in Mare, Roy and Petra, Flocca Linen Duvet in Fonda, Flocca Linen Blanket in Fog

Blue is the colour most prevalent in the natural world, which is perhaps why we find it so soothing. Coastal-inspired hues such as oceanic Mare and deep sea blue Fonda are ideal for creating a tranquil sleep haven, with tonal layers of pale grey Fog and light, sandy neutrals combining to evoke moody skies and expansive horizons. These colours can also be used on walls and ceilings for an immersive sense of retreat.

Much like blue, shades of green can mirror the comforting qualities found in nature, so look to our lush Armee hue, evocative of rolling pastures, and the soft, silvery sage of Argent, for a natural refresh. How light or dark a colour appears, as well as its 'chroma' – how saturated or washed out it is – can also produce different reactions. For example, the emotions provoked by a deep, rich khaki might be quite different to the feeling we get from a light, whisper-soft green.

Crush Merino Blanket in Oro, Flocca Linen Macarons in Russo, Ayrton and Maiz

Warm colours such as yellow and orange are commonly associated with joy and happiness, and while some might find these mood-boosting colours a little too stimulating for the bedroom, they can elevate an otherwise pared-back scheme when introduced through vibrant accent pieces. Our Crush Merino Wool Blanket in Oro Melange, a soft, muted saffron, or cushions and throws in the soft gold Maiz  add instant warmth and vitality to a neutral palette.

Flocca Linen Cushion in Armee, Flocca Linen Macron in Bere, Flocca Long Pillowcase in Cep, Kristine Linen Pillowcase in Floss, Basix Stripe Pillowcase in Floss/Rosa

Pink has long been synonymous with love and romance, making it beautifully suited for a bedroom or any space where you would like to lend a feminine sensibility. The earthy, clay pink of Rosa and the gentle softness of Floss offer sumptuous appeal to a layered bedscape while balancing rich, earthy hues such as Bere, Brun and Russo. Also associated with youth and playfulness, a hint of pink in a Macaron cushion or textural throw can make a welcome addition to a contemporary space.

The colour of your lighting can similarly impact your mood, with red light believed to be the best option for relaxation as it boosts melatonin and therefore helps the brain reach a natural sleep state quicker. Blue or cool light, on the other hand, has the opposite effect and should be avoided in the evenings. if you don't have a red light, try using warm bulbs or even candlelight for a gentle ambience and an environment that's most conducive to rest.
