Nestled on a peaceful, leafy acre in Nowa Nowa, in Victoria’s East Gippsland, Hutt Living is a cosy, sun-dappled sanctuary that marries functional design with luxury finishes. Thoughtfully crafted with a “less is more” approach, we had a chat with owner Cora Kenworthy-Smith about what inspired this tranquil accommodation.

When and what brought about the fascination with tiny homes?
The inspiration behind Hutt Living was a blend of personal and professional influences. My partner Dan has been in the building industry for over 20 years and has always been drawn to creating functional spaces. His interest in tiny homes started during his travels, where he saw various forms of compact and efficient living spaces. Inspired by this, we decided to build similar accommodation back home. The challenges and creativity involved in designing small yet highly functional spaces intrigued us, and so the concept of Hutt Living was born. With the success of Hutt Living, we’re thrilled to be starting our second tiny home, continuing our journey to create unique living spaces.

Why Nowa Nowa, what is your connection to this area?
Dan’s family has owned a 20-acre property in Nowa Nowa for 25 years, with five acres of wetlands that border Lake Tyers State Park. They have always been drawn to the idea of living out of town but still having access to everything they need. Nowa Nowa offers the perfect balance, combining the tranquillity of a rural setting with proximity to nearby towns and beaches.

What does the perfect weekend itinerary look like at Hutt Living?
We believe the perfect weekend at Hutt Living begins with breakfast on the deck, where you can soak in the views and the sounds of nature waking up around you. The day is spent exploring the stunning natural surroundings—whether wandering through the wetlands, discovering hidden caves, or taking a peaceful stroll along the nearby beaches. For those who love adventure, there are plenty of local attractions to uncover.

As the day winds down, you return to Hutt Living for a well-deserved rest. Whether you curl up with a good book or simply soak in the tranquillity of your surroundings, relaxation is key. As the sun sets, the warmth of the outdoor fire sets the stage for a cosy evening filled with board games and laughter—and a vino or two.

Dan is the builder, you're the stylist – what was it like working on your first home build together and how do your skills complement one another?
Fun! We both have an appreciation for quality and believe that less is more. Our shared commitment to simplicity and minimalism made our choices easy. I would say our strengths complement each other perfectly. Dan brings a keen focus on functionality and design. His practical approach ensures that everything is both beautiful and useful. My strength lies in softening spaces and making them feel inviting. Textiles are where I truly shine, adding warmth and texture to bring our designs to life.

You and your mum Wendy have an interior decorating business, Seaby House, and have chosen HMCo. for a few projects – why did you select our pieces for Hutt Living?
HMCo. was an obvious choice for us. We’ve always admired your commitment to quality, which aligns perfectly with our Seaby House’s design philosophy. Our vision was centred around luxury living in the great outdoors. HMCo.’s buttery soft products naturally complemented this vision, adding to the sense of comfort and elegance we aimed to achieve. The hardest part of the process was choosing which colour linen to go with — every option from HMCo. seemed perfect for our project!

What inspired your colour choices?
Our inspiration came directly from nature. We’ve always been drawn to earthy tones that create a sense of warmth. With our focus on large windows that serve as natural artwork, we wanted the interior to complement the outdoor scenery. We decided on Bere for its deep yet subdued tone, which subtly enhances the space without overshadowing the natural beauty around us.

What do you hope people will experience during their stay at Hutt Living?
We want people to experience the perfect balance of outdoor adventure and comfort. At Hutt Living, it's incredibly easy for guests to feel like they’re camping—immersed in nature, surrounded by the beauty and tranquillity of the outdoors—while only needing to pack a weekend bag. We’ve designed the space so that you can enjoy the full camping experience but with a touch of luxury. Whether it’s the cosy warmth of a well-designed tiny home or the ease of having everything you need right there, our goal is to create a space where people can unwind, connect with nature, and make memories without sacrificing the comforts of home.
