Págo, located at the heart of Middleton on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, is the sanctuary we have been seeking. Just over an hour from Adelaide, the 19th-century stables-turned-luxury retreat feels a world away from the city, offering blissful accommodation that has been lovingly restored by owner and winemaker Rose Kentish with help of Adelaide-based interior architecture and design studio Fabrikate. Moments from the beach and with all the wonders of the Peninsula's south coast region to explore, Págo provides an inviting escape enriched with history and natural beauty.
Balancing traditional and modern touches, a strong emphasis has been placed on tonality and textures throughout the renovation of this heritage property – the original stone walls, though whitewashed, still reveal a bumpy, tactile quality. Featuring four stunning bedrooms nestled around a 20-metre pool and spa within an acre of private garden, the stables were built in the 1850s from local stone and handmade red bricks. Inside, guests can discover the owners’ private art collection, alongside secondhand pieces that Rose and her husband, Sam Harrison, have discerningly gathered over the years.

This carefully considered approach caught the eye of popular publication Broadsheet, whose feature on the idyllic stay highlights the many personal touches honouring craftspeople both near and far – delicate, hand-blown lamps and thrown ceramics from Jam Factory can be found beside handmade shower tiles from Morocco. Along with the décor, Págo’s furnishings and materials – including furniture made by Sam and finished at Adelaide family business St Morris Upholsterers – have been thoughtfully chosen to work harmoniously with the landscape and the building's original, character-filled details.
