A Weekend in Noosa with Chloe Tozer

Home of Chloe Tozer @villa_desfleurs I Interior: @chloejtozer I @jackclissold I Photography: @lillie_thompson When she's not gathering objects and inspiration from faraway lands, the founder and creative director of CLO Studios can be found at home on the Sunshine Coast enjoying ocean dips, farmers' market meanders and evening cook-ups at her dreamy, Mediterranean-inspired haven, Villa des Fleurs. Home of Chloe Tozer @villa_desfleurs I Interior: @chloejtozer I @jackclissold I Photography: @lillie_thompson Have you always called Noosa home? My family relocated to Noosa from South Australia when I was two years old. I feel so lucky to have grown up here and now own a business in the community. It’s a great place to call home.  Hastings Street, Noosa Can you tell us about your background and what led you to create CLO Studios? CLO was born in 2016, the year I finished my Fine Arts degree. With a background in silversmithing, I wanted to open a studio space to make jewellery as well as having an outlet to showcase beautiful brands and artists I loved, alongside objects and furniture collected from my travels. Together with our boutique, CLO evolved into offering interior design and styling services through our Atelier, working on both residential and boutique commercial projects.    Chloe Tozer at CLO Boutique, Noosa |  Photography: @jamie_.green Where do you find inspiration for CLO? My creative direction is all about celebrating artisanal skills and traditional methods of creating. The foundations of CLO Studios were built from my experiences travelling and being inspired by culture and stories. I think there is something so beautiful about bringing together different objects from opposite corners of the world and the same theory is evident in our home, Villa des Fleurs. Design should be a celebration and expression of self.   CLO Boutique, Noosa | Photography: @jamie_.green What makes Noosa special and what does your perfect weekend at home look like?  The reason I love Noosa is the natural beauty that surrounds us. We have incredible national parks, mountains and oceans in every direction. Some of my favourite places to go are Noosa National Park, and I particularly love Tea Tree Bay for a swim. For hiking, Mount Pomona is very special – the views from the top are breathtaking.  My perfect weekend in Noosa starts with visiting the Yandina Markets, stocking up on organic produce for the week, a walk and swim at our local beach in Peregian, and cooking at home with friends and family. Sundays start with a reformer class at Bare Bones Movement in Noosa Junction, more cooking and then sunset at Noosa Main Beach.  When friends come to visit, we love to head up past Noosa’s North Shore to Double Island Point, spending the day there with surfboards and a picnic.  What is your favourite time of year in Noosa and why? Winter. It’s the best time of year in Noosa. The open beaches are at their best — crisp with no wind. It’s still warm in the sunshine but at night it's cold enough to have a fire at home.  What are some of your favourite items from the CLO collection? We recently launched Choux, our latest collection of upholstered furniture which is locally handcrafted in Australia. It was dreamt of when designing my own home; I wanted a collection of furniture you would envision living in a villa by the Mediterranean Sea. I really love the Emie Sofa and Gigi Slipper Chair, both are timeless pieces that will become family heirlooms.  Home of Chloe Tozer on the Gigi Slipper Chair | @villa_desfleurs I Interior: @chloejtozer I @jackclissold Why have you chosen HMCo as one of your featured brands and can you share your most loved pieces and hues from the collection? Hale Mercantile stands out for its effortless luxury and beautiful quality. My favourite hues are Aryton, Bere, Fog and Moro. I love the frill detail of the Kristine collection and I always have the Basix Linen Quilt in Aryton on my bed. In winter I layer it over a duvet and in summer it’s the perfect weight to have by itself. For bathing, I have used the Flocca towels for years. I love how quick-drying they are and how perfectly they drape off our bathroom hooks.  Master bedroom @villa_desfleurs I Interior: @chloejtozer I @jackclissold I Photography:@lillie_thompson I Featured: Basix Linen Quilt in Ayrton Bathroom @villa_desfleurs Interior: @chloejtozer I @jackclissold I Photography:@lillie_thompson I Featured: Flocca Linen Hand Towel in Russo To explore CLO Studios, click here

Growth in Flax

A growing demand for natural and sustainable textiles has led to increasing interest in the European flax market in recent years, with pure linen proving a covetable investment by those seeking environmentally friendly fabrics that also offer quality, longevity and everyday luxury.  In Ancient times, the lengthy, arduous process of making linen – from growing the plant to the skill and time required to weave it – meant it was often regarded as a symbol of refinement and reserved for the wealthy. While customarily a fabric for the affluent, in 789 French king Charlemagne decreed that all households must cultivate flax and weave their own linen, a tradition that continued well into the 18th century.  American colonies also began to grow, harvest and process their own crops, transforming the flax into luxurious and useful everyday items such as bed linen and napery for the home. In the 19th century, the linen industry was overtaken by cotton, as craftsmen working on handlooms struggled to keep up with the speed at which cotton fabrics could be produced on the latest industrial machinery.  While further decline was largely triggered by a move towards cheaper man-made fibres, we are once again seeing linen demand rising due to its low impact on the environment – flax requires little or no fertilisers and much less water than other crops such as cotton. Flax is now grown all over the world, with French and Belgian flax considered to be the highest quality, as climate change influences both producers and consumers to favour this durable, low-impact fibre. Admired for its rich texture and timeless style, linen's aesthetic appeal is eclipsed only by its practicality – the Romans christened the flax plant Linum usitatissimum meaning 'most useful flax'. Although linen can be more expensive to buy, its hard-wearing properties mean it is likely to last much longer than cotton when cared for properly, with many choosing to invest in key pieces that will become treasured heirlooms as they once were all those years ago. Basix Linen Quilt in Sable This sentiment spans both fashion and interior design industries, with businesses seeking out environmentally friendly materials to reflect ethical practices and encourage conscious consumption. While the spotlight on linen's sustainability credentials might be a more recent trend, its natural strength and breathability, coupled with its raw beauty and luxurious textural appeal, are enduring qualities that have proved linen to be a coveted fabric for millennia – and its popularity is only continuing to grow.  Basix Linen Quilt in Sable, Flocca Linen Duvet in Sable, Crush Linen Throw in Brun, Flocca Linen Euro in Sable, Flocca Long Pillowcase in Sable, Flocca Linen Cushion in Sable At HMCo. we are passionate about true craftsmanship and considered production, sourcing only the highest quality European materials and manufacturing to create our pure linen collections. Sundays with Rhubarb Sponge Cake

Kornelia Witek is a stylist and photographer who captures the fleeting beauty of everyday moments. Her work is inspired by nature, the changing quality of light, and her childhood growing up in a small town – ordinary aspects of daily life that take on a dreamlike quality through her lens. Here, she shares her recipe for a deliciously aromatic cake that invites us to find pleasure in slow morning rituals. Rhubarb Sponge Cake I Photography: @kornelia_witek_photography I Featured: Basix Linen Tutto Towel in Ayrton "This photo, as with so many others, is a result of split-second reflexes, because sometimes a split second is all you have," says Kornelia of her sun-drenched, springtime tablescape. "Imagine, a cake freshly popped out of the oven, the air still hot and swirling with a delicious aroma of vanilla, caramelised sugar, and a tart, juicy note of pink rhubarb stalks. My four-year-old bouncing at my elbow, eager for his first taste." Featured: Basix Linen Tutto Towel in Ayrton Soft, textural layers and a tonal palette of pink, white and cream lend the perfect backdrop for a relaxed yet elegant afternoon tea. "I barely had the presence of mind to catch it. A table with fresh linens, the cake, the mid-morning light flooding through the open window, and lilacs from the garden; there, a study in spring and the ordinary." Rhubarb Sponge Cake (serves 8-10)  Ingredients 340 grams of butter 340 grams of raw cane sugar (Kornelia used brown sugar in a smaller quantity) 6 large eggs 2 teaspoon of vanilla extract 240 grams of plain flour 2 and 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder 600 grams of rhubarb cut into 1-inch pieces (wash stalks thoroughly) *All ingredients need to be at room temperature.*You can substitute rhubarb with other seasonal fruits. Method Preheat oven to 175°C Using a mixer, blend butter and sugar in a bowl until the batter is smooth. Gradually add eggs and blend until all ingredients are combined. Add vanilla extract and mix it all together. Sift in the flour and baking powder directly, mixing with a spatula until all ingredients are combined. Add most of the rhubarb, leaving some to sprinkle on the top. Give it a few more stirs to combine everything. Line a 25cm cake pan with parchment paper, butter and flour. Pour cake batter into prepared tin and bake for 40-45 minutes. Poke with a skewer to check that the dough doesn’t stick; if it does, leave it in the oven for a few more minutes and check again. Enjoy!

Elevate Your Bathroom Style

If you're wondering how to refresh your bathroom and don't know where to start, rest assured that a few small considerations are all it takes to make this space a spa-like haven you'll enjoy escaping to. Whether you wish to entertain guests or simply upgrade your everyday routine, these bathroom styling tips offer both luxury and practicality.       Interior: @kyalandkara I Flocca Linen Hand Towel in Armee Introduce unexpected elements  When it comes to using decorative furnishings to inject personality, the bathroom is often overlooked due to its functional purpose. Make your bathroom as inviting as the rest of your home by hanging a striking piece of art, introducing wallpaper for pattern and interest, or layering soft textiles such as cushions and curtains that are often reserved for other rooms to add warmth and comfort. Interior: @prospectrefuge I Photography: @chrismottalini I Featured: Flocca Linen Hand Towel in Russo Get clever with storage Bathrooms are commonly one of the smallest rooms in the home, which is why they benefit greatly from creative storage solutions. A ladder used as a towel rack can lean against a wall and move around as needed, while a vintage chair or a simple yet stylish milking stool serves the multifunctional purpose of keeping bath essentials within easy reach.    Interior: @oho_interiors I Styling: @cate.ragan.styling I Photography: @judithmarilyn I Featured: Kristine Linen Guest Towel in Tempest Create cohesion with bath linen Matching your bath towels with your hand towels can create an interior design-approved bathroom, offering a seamless look that carries through from your vanity to your shower. Ocean Grove Styled by Nina Provan

When a busy Melbourne family enlisted award-winning architects Kennedy Nolan to design a modern beach house in a tranquil setting on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, interior designer Nina Provan lent her expert eye to style this stunning coastal home. Nina shares the inspiration behind this timeless and contemporary project, as seen in The Design Files, which features a thoughtful layering of colours and textures that reflect the surrounding landscape. Interior Designer: @nina_provan Can you describe the initial brief for Ocean Grove? My clients, Paul and Felicity Rodgers from Cargo Crew, are business owners in Melbourne with a young family. I had previously worked with them on their family home and they had been planning their coastal getaway in Ocean Grove for some time. Their brief was to give the home an eclectic personality that complemented and reflected the architecture, as well as their appreciation for design.  They live a busy life so they like to spend a lot of weekends and holidays in the home. It was important that it felt like a calm sanctuary; a place that differed from their city residence and was infused with hotel-like gestures without feeling impersonal. They have such a great sense of style being designers in their industry, so that certainly informed how bold I could be with my selections. They were really trusting throughout the whole process and gave me a lot of creative freedom! Architecture: @kennedy_nolan I Furniture & Styling: @nina_provan I Photography: @derek_swalwell I Published: @thedesignfiles What are some of your favourite details in this home? The space by the fireplace in the main living area is textural and cosy. The master bedroom has an open ensuite (another nod to hotel design) with a round bath that acts as a striking centrepiece while maximising views from the north and south. Architecture: @kennedy_nolan I Furniture & Styling: @nina_provan I Photography: @derek_swalwell I Published: @thedesignfiles I Featured: Flocca Linen Blanket in Sable What was the most rewarding part of this project? For me, visiting their home after they’d settled in and spent some time creating memories is soul-nourishing. Seeing little personal touches the clients have added or hearing how they love sitting in a particular spot to read, all those things that make a home, those are the biggest rewards for me. It’s important for me to design a home with elements that can be built upon over time, adding layers as memories are made and travels ventured. Architecture: @kennedy_nolan I Furniture & Styling: @nina_provan I Photography: @derek_swalwell I Published: @thedesignfiles I Featured: Flocca Linen Body Cushion in Tempest With Ocean Grove being a new build and essentially a blank canvas, what challenges did you face with the interiors and styling? The architects on this project were Kennedy Nolan, who have an incredible aesthetic that I’ve admired for many years, so it was a pleasure to furnish and style their design. The central colour of the project was a lovely deep tranquil green that reflected the site's natural landscape, which was framed in various aspects throughout the home.  In some spaces I wanted to complement that tone through pieces that had similar qualities and in other spaces; to challenge the green and be bold and memorable. Showing the different characters of a colour gives depth and personality and it’s fascinating how different atmospheres can be created by playing with notes that accentuate it. What has drawn you to use HMCo in this project?I’ve always loved the HMCo colour palette and the texture and quality of the linen. There is always a selection that works out of the 20-odd colours! Which bedroom colourway within the home is your favourite? The guest bedroom, which is a deep forest green from floor to ceiling, contrasts beautifully with the earthy, warm tones of Russo, Brun and Carmel. It’s just a very cosy and inviting room. Copperstone is an accumulation of all the learnings from our previous projects. As we built from scratch, we were able to really take advantage of the land site and take the design to another level, creating a more sophisticated offering than any of our previous projects. Where do you find inspiration? Travel and adventuring amongst old cities and centuries-old country estates across Europe. We want our guests to feel a home away from home and a touch of European holiday escapism in the hinterland of Byron Bay.  Copperstone I Luxury Accommodation in Bangalow, NSW I Interior: @therangeestates | Photography: @seanfennessy What is your favourite part of Copperstone? The main living area of the homestead. It has generous proportions with grand-scale vast ceilings and beautiful minimalism, but at the same time, it has a softness that makes it feel like a home. Copperstone I Luxury Accommodation in Bangalow, NSW I Interior: @therangeestates | Photography: @seanfennessy | Co-founder and Creative Director: @emmallane What were the most challenging and rewarding parts of completing Copperstone? The most challenging element of the build was trying to manoeuvre the huge ceiling beams at the early construction stage, which were both extremely heavy and expansive in size. The most rewarding part was covering the walls with breathable Ibizan plaster that not only looks beautiful and textual but actually improves the air quality of the bedrooms as you sleep. Firstly, a moment to breathe, as over the last two years we have completed two large projects – Copperstone in Bangalow and Highground in the Southern Highlands. We are working on a few other projects behind the scenes but these are in the early stages of design and planning. Sensory Sleep Rituals

Getting a good night's sleep can be impacted considerably by our sleep hygiene, which includes habits, behaviours and environmental factors that promote consistent and high-quality sleep. By considering all five senses when it comes to your evening routine, from the colour and texture of your bedding to the sounds and scents you surround yourself with, you can create a sanctuary that invites calm and relaxation and helps you to get the best sleep possible. Basix Linen Quilt in Ayrton, Flocca Linen Pillowcase in Ayron Smell  Aromatherapy can be traced back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Roman societies using essential oils for health and healing, with studies showing that the practice can significantly improve sleep quality as well as lower stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression. Some sleep-inducing scents include lavender, clary sage, rose and chamomile, while others such as citrus, peppermint and bergamot are known for their energising qualities and are best left for the daytime. For a dreamy evening ritual, take your pick of an oil burner, diffuser, candle, room spray or topical application to scent your bedroom naturally.     Sound   Many of us are sensitive to sound when we are trying to drift off to sleep, and while a soundproof bedroom would be ideal, nighttime noise is a reality for most people. Thankfully there are simple ways to drown out external sound, not to mention distract from constant thoughts. From white noise and nature sounds (think: the pitter-patter of raindrops or a flowing stream) to sleep stories and guided meditation, you’ll discover plenty of options on apps such as Calm and Spotify designed specifically to help you sleep. Making a relaxing music playlist might also do the trick, and if you prefer silence, a quality pair of earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones may be the best option for you. We enjoy 'Deep Sleep' by Spotify. click here to listen.  Taste   It's no surprise that food and drink play a role in influencing our quality of sleep, and following tried-and-tested methods such as limiting caffeine after midday and allowing three hours between your last meal and bedtime (to aid digestion and reduce the likelihood of heartburn and insomnia) will set you up for optimal rest. For a soothing bedtime ritual, sip a warm cup of chamomile tea, a natural stress reliever with a mild sedative effect, an hour before climbing between the sheets. Lavender, passionflower and valerian are other relaxing herbal options for a cosy, sleep-inducing nightcap.  Flocca Linen Flat Sheet in Fog Touch Our sense of touch includes our surrounding temperature and the textures we feel, both of which contribute to our well-being and in turn our sleep quality. To ensure the best shut-eye possible, creating a cool, comfortable and texturally appealing sleep environment is key, with natural, breathable bedding such as pure linen proving ideal for creating a luxurious and restful sleep space. With a rich tactile appeal that soothes the senses, our pure linen bedding can be effortlessly layered up or down to achieve the perfect temperature in all seasons.  Basix Linen Stripe Cushion in Mare/Bere, Flocca Linen Flat Sheet in Fog, Flocca Linen Pillowcases in Kali, Sable, Roy and Fog Sight  Research shows that certain colours may promote comfort and relaxation, so it makes sense to use these hues in your bedroom. For a restful slumber, look to nature-inspired colours such as cool, calming blues or a tranquil green palette reminiscent of a bucolic landscape. Serene shades of white and cream can also lend a peaceful feeling to your bedscape. In addition to choosing the best colours for sleep, limiting blue light, which boosts cortisol and suppresses melatonin levels, is also recommended. As this is most commonly emitted from computer screens and mobile devices, consider replacing technology with a book or practising meditation to help wind down for deep and restorative sleep.

Restorative Luxury at 28 Degrees

We chat with owner and interior designer Deb Garske about the inspiration behind 28 Degrees and the special touches that make this adults-only sanctuary a space to rest and reset.  Luxury Accommodation: @28degreesbyronbay I Linen purchased via 28 Degrees I Featured: Flocca Linen Duvet in Floss I Double Crush Throw in Petra/Kali  'I bought some pieces for personal use prior to opening the guesthouse and was so impressed by the quality. When the colour didn’t fade and it became so much softer with further use, that to me, signifies pure luxury.' - Deb Garske Can you tell us about the inspiration behind 28 Degrees Byron Bay? Whilst recovering from chemotherapy in 2015 after being granted only two weeks left to live, I decided I was going to move to Byron Bay, where I was married in 2005, to prioritise my health and wellbeing. We bought a quaint house in an ideal location, within walking distance from the beach and one block from town – perfect for our growing family. As part of my recovery, I wanted to build a respite that offered others the same nurturing experience and opportunity to heal.  28 Degrees was consciously created from my healing journey, which inspired every aspect of the design and build – even down to the suppliers chosen. Every element of the business was meticulously chosen to align with a healthy, sustainable space that would encourage guests to unplug and recharge away from the chaotic stress of everyday life.   Luxury Accommodation: @28degreesbyronbay Can you share your favourite interior design selections for this property? As an interior designer, I’m very tactile, so everything must feel beautiful and high-quality. That includes every detail of the property, from the floorboards you walk on and the $20,000 mattresses topped in Hale Mercantile bedding you sleep in, to the water you bathe in and consume, both filtered by a Grander water system. The Maker and Son sofas in each room add beautiful touches to the space. The other feature that creates a relaxed ambience is the handmade pendant lights from New Zealand, which remind me of my childhood in Japan. Additionally, as we have a no-TV policy, we invite guests to lose themselves in a carefully curated selection of books. We have worked tirelessly to create a luxurious experience that spans beyond the cosmetics of the property. Every aspect of 28 Degrees encourages wellbeing, from the hand-poured natural beeswax candles in each room and the low-VOC, non-toxic paint to the organic, homemade parfait-style breakfast.  Being an adults-only property ensures guests can really unwind, and we advise each guest upon arrival that peace and privacy are our priorities. Each aspect is designed to slow you down, from the locally sourced Byron Moonshine slow-drip coffee to the Maker and Son sofa perfectly positioned under the hanging pendant light, providing the cosiest reading nook. @28degreesbyronbay What are your top recommendations for anyone planning an upcoming trip to Byron?  We recommend walking along the beach to the lighthouse, where you can see turtles and dolphins as well as golden sunrises and sunsets, and we encourage guests to take a complimentary bike and explore the surrounds like a local. As we are one block from town, we have the best cafes and restaurants on our doorstep, including the hatted restaurant, Beach. We suggest driving through the hinterland to visit quaint towns like Bangalow, Clunes and Federal, and we provide all guests with information on the best waterfalls to visit in the area.  Luxury Accommodation: @28degreesbyronbay I Linen purchased via 28 Degrees I Featured: Kristine Linen Pillowcase in Sable, Flocca Linen Pillowcase in Floss, Flocca Linen Flat Sheet in Nox, Flocca Linen Duvet in Fog, Flocca Linen Tall Bedhead in Nox'My favourite pieces are from the Kristine bedding range, and my favourite colour combination is Floss, Fog and Sable.' - Deb Garske What kind of experience can your guests expect from a stay at 28 Degrees? We’ve chosen the bedding, including the mattresses, bedding sets and linen, to be top-range quality, as we believe the most rejuvenating getaways can only be built upon a foundation of deep, restful sleep.  Luxury Accommodation: 28 Degrees Byron Bay

Rich tones and soft, tactile furnishings lend understated luxury while an artful pairing of warm, caramel hues and soft, creamy textures imbues a contemporary sensibility to the interior, which the designer wanted to feel both airy and intimate.  Interior/Architecture: @studioesteta I Photography: @sharyncairns I Published: @thelocalproject I Featured: Flocca Euro Pillowcase in Russo, Flocca Linen Duvet in Mare, Crush Linen Throw in Armee Studio EstetaAs a brand committed to quality craftsmanship and purposeful design, we felt an instant affinity with this considered refurbishment project by Studio Esteta, set against the stunning background of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.
